Dialectics
The concept of Dialectics in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) reminds us that multiple truths can exist at the same time. Rather than slipping into black and white thinking or invalidating parts of your experience, try getting more expansive- let it all be here.
You can be grateful AND you can be having a hard time.
You can appreciate your partner AND be frustrated with them.
You can be doing your best AND want to do better.
You can feel unmotivated to do something AND know that it needs to get done.
Anytime you feel the need to use the word “but,” try replacing it with AND. ‘And’ allows for more than one idea to be present in our minds, giving us more space for all the nuance of our feelings and of the reality that we are currently in.
